Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
After clocking up nearly 300 visits and launching three new products during 2012, Ivor Goodsite was back in January and ready as ever to try and beat his own personal best. And what better way to start the New Year than to be invited to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, a one-of-a-kind tour involving some very special people.
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is one of the largest in Europe, providing care for over 200,000 children each year and programmes at more than 40 community outreach sites.
Ivor spent time with children and staff on the neurology, cardiac and surgical wards, and in the hospital’s restaurant. Liverpool contractor, Fletchrose, led the tour accompanied by two of their young female apprentices, Operations Director Bill Sargeant, and Site Manager Craig Connelly AKA Ivor! The firm is currently on site at Alder Hey, carrying out preparation works as part of the re-development of the hospital.
Bill Sargeant said:
“We had a fantastic day at Alder Hey and the two mascots went down a storm with everyone. It was also quite an emotional experience for our apprentices, Jordan and Nicole, but also an uplifting one seeing the smiles on the faces of children who are quite ill and have had major surgery in some cases. As well as sharing some laughs, Ivor was able to talk about the new hospital and spread the important site safety messages as the lead up to start of work on site approaches.”
In March 2013, construction work will commence on a brand new hospital building as part of the redevelopment scheme, ‘Alder Hey in the Park’. The new Alder Hey hospital will be built in Springfield Park, next door to the current site whilst the existing Alder Hey hospital, which currently treats 275,000 patients a year, will be demolished and transformed into a replacement green space. The 60,000 metres squared scheme will feature 270 beds and 16 operating theatres. A 1200 space multi-storey car park is also planned.
Ivor was absolutely thrilled to meet so many children, and helped the Fletchrose team explain the plans for the new hospital and what they could expect over the coming months. The children were equally delighted, high-fiving Ivor and smiling for photographs – a fantastic day was had by all.
The official opening of the hospital is planned for Summer 2015.
