Supporting the National Child Safety Week

Child Safety Week is a community education campaign organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) which will run from 18 – 24 June 2012.

Through Child Safety Week, CAPT aims to raise awareness of the accidents that seriously injure or kill children and how to prevent them. Every year, thousands of organisations across the UK take part in Child Safety Week, holding hundreds of events and coming up with great ways of getting safety messages across to parents and families in fun, imaginative and engaging ways.

As an industry, construction has always been recognised as one of, if not the most dangerous profession to work in. Not only this, but the safety of members of the public who may be affected by construction work is a serious issue, never more so than when children are involved. Figures show that there were 174 reported non-fatal injuries to members of the public in 2010-11, with 17 of these injuries being to children aged 16 or under*.

Developed by the Considerate Constructors Scheme to tackle this issue, Ivor Goodsite is used by registered sites and companies to promote the message of construction site safety to a young audience, while also promoting the construction industry as a great career choice for when they’re older. Ivor’s aim is to teach children to respect the dangers found on construction sites, and to stay safe by staying away from them. To help Ivor do this, he has an ever-expanding range of products, including children’s fun packs, PPE sets and ‘Hunt the Hazard!’ site signs.

As part of the Ivor’s ongoing efforts to raise children’s awareness regarding the dangers on construction sites, he is looking to recognise and promote the excellent work sites and companies undertake during Child Safety Week. Contractors holding events during Child Safety Week will be contacted and case studies of these events are to be published on Ivor’s website to show how companies are promoting safety to children.

To further acknowledge this campaign, Ivor is now offering contractors a 10% discount on his ‘Hunt the Hazard!’ site sign up until the end of Child Safety Week.

‘Hunt the Hazard!’ is a cartoon sign to be put up on site hoarding or fencing, and displays a fictional construction site showing a number of potential hazards for children to find. Since their launch in July 2011, these have proven extremely popular in engaging a young audience and can now be purchased for only £45.00 + VAT each.
